Competition organiser Pop Dickerson is set the strap on the boots and return to the court when Warwick’s Open Basketball competition returns to WIRAC tonight (Thursday).
Dickerson will play for Wickhams as they take on The Left Overs in the bottom of the ladder clash.
Both sides are eager to turn their season around, and Wickhams received a boost this week with the addition of Pop Dickerson.
“I don’t know if I’ll make a difference to Wickhams’ outcomes, but I’m looking forward to having a run,” said Dickerson. Wickhams have faced challenges securing wins in recent seasons, and Pop hopes to help change that.
“I have not had a run in about two seasons but have been refereeing games and organising the competition.”
Dickerson is the all-time leading scorer in the Queensland Basketball league – averaging 30 points a game over 12 seasons from 1986 to 1998.
“That was a long long time ago,” he laughed.
“I still love the game and I love the physical activity of running up and down the court.
“I’m tired of watching and would like to participate. Basketball is good that way because no matter how old you are you can still have a run and don’t have to worry about someone trying to know your head off.
“I also think I can help if only a little. The Wickham team plays hard every week but they just lack a bit of height and size. I hope to help them in those areas. It won’t be much but every little bit I can help will do. “
When asked what age he was Dickerson laughed “Age is just a number.”
