Invasion of ibis

In brief

IN ITS natural habitat the Australian white Ibis is a protected native species that plays an important role in its natural wetland habitat, but it has invaded cities and towns in recent decades.
An Australia-wide census of ibis populations is being conducted by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage on Sunday, 20 October.
The white ibis population boom means they are now considered a pest because of their nuisance value, risk to aviation safety and their impact on biodiversity.
There is a need to balance the long-term survival of this native bird against the negative impacts of the white ibis caused by its overwhelming numbers.
Those who see an Australian white ibis on Sunday, 20 October are asked to complete the ibis census datasheet at www.environmentNSW.gov.au/surveys/WhiteIbisSightingForm.htm

NOMINATIONS for the 2014 Rural Women’s Award close at the end of the month.
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry John McVeigh said Queensland women working in primary or rural industries who had leadership potential and a project that would benefit their industry or community were encouraged to apply.
“Applications for the 2014 Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation Rural Women’s Awards close 31 October 2013,” he said.
“Now in its 14th year, the award provides a $10,000 bursary to help each state/territory winner implement her award vision.
“It’s also an invaluable opportunity for women to grow personally and professionally, to build their leadership and professional development skills and connect with a like-minded network of rural women who are equally passionate about rural and primary industries.”
