CAMPDRAFT competitors wait their turn to compete in the CG Welding and Maydan Feedlot Ladies Silver Cup in Warwick. Warwick is recognised as the home of campdrafting in Australia, but credit for the sport’s birthplace must go to Tenterfield where the first official campdrafting competition was held in 1885.
While campdrafts had been held before this, it was Clarence Smith who formulated the first set of rules, leading to Tenterfield’s first event. These days competitors must choose a beast in a small yard of around 10 steers, cut it out and then guide it around two pegs and a gate. Scores are given for cutting out, horsemanship working the animal, and for completion of the course without losing control of the steer. 108659
