Call to cut water use

By STEVE GRAY

SOUTHERN Downs residents are being asked to ease up on their water use.
Consumption across the region is over the five year average and people seem to have forgotten the drought, Southern Downs Regional Council director of engineering services, Peter See said.
“People need to stick to the permanent restrictions,” he said.
“They can use a sprinkler, but they can only use it for 30 minutes each day, but if they want to stand in the yard with a hose for two hours, that’s quite OK.
“What we don’t want is people using water without any thought… because they’ve forgotten they left a sprinkler on.”
Mr See said people are understandably using a bit more water because of the dry conditions, but they’re forgetting some of the lessons of the last drought.
He said it better that people curbed their use rather than have the council impose the next level of restrictions in the future.
“If we look after it now then we’ll go a lot longer before we have to put in the next level of restrictions,” Mr See said.
Anybody with queries about water use or restrictions can contact council or view the water restrictions on council’s website. The restrictions were also included in the last water rates notice.
Residents can water outside anytime on their allocated days except between 10am and 4pm.
Odd street numbers or no street numbers can water Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.
Even street numbers can water Saturday, Monday and Wednesday.
