Colts claim Souths scalp

UNDER lights the Inter town Twenty 20 competition continued as Souths played Warwick Hotel Colts.
Souths were under early pressure from an energetic Colts team. Colts restricted their more experienced rivals to 81 runs. Captain Ben Staley (23), Jordan Lanza (13) and wides (16) were the main contributors to the score.
In reply the Colts pairing of Brendan Iles and John Cleary smashed the depleted South’s line up to all points of the ground.
Both players retired on 52 and 50 runs respectively after scoring 10 fours and four sixes.
Colts completed their 20 overs with 174 runs on the scoreboard and a well earned win.

WREN-DING ASSISTANCE
WREN’S Valley Turf recently came to the aid of the Stanthorpe Junior Cricket Association Inc and Stanthorpe and District Cricket Association Inc donating and suppling the local river sand from their property to assist top-dressing the outfield and old turf wicket area at CF White Oval.
Also lending their help was Featherstone Bobcat Hire who delivered and spread the sand. Both organisations wish to acknowledge the generosity of Wren Valley Turf and Featherstone’s. The work will further improve the outfield and benefit both cricket and football in coming seasons. The SJCA also wishes to thank the SDRC for providing a General Grant of $500- towards this project.

QUESTION ANSWERED
THE recent publication of a team photo of a group of Stanthorpe footballers in Glen Innes in 1937 drew plenty of attention. Sue O’Brien of Stanthorpe contacted me shortly before Christmas to say she also has a copy of the same photo but had all the player names.
They are as follows:
Back: Cliff Stanton, Mick Madsen, Jim Mann, Ted Bates, Bill Holmes, Jerry O’Brien, Arthur Newton, Jack Mann, Bert Biddle, Mick Mann, Roy Butler.
Sitting: Jack O’Brien, Tom Mann, And Mascot: Jerry Pettiford. Driver: Dinny Allen, Jack Mitchell.
We have since received an email suggesting one the players in the back row could be Cecil Jones. Cecil Jones was very well known in soccer circles and was also actively involved in the rugby league scene in the late 1960s, however I think this may be a case of mistaken identity.
