Highway fatality

A TRUCK driver was killed after his B-double left the New England Highwayand crashed and burnt near Dalveen early on Wednesday morning.
The truck was carrying cooking oil and other bottled foodstuffs when it careered over a 10-metre embankment into the bush and burst into flames at about 3.45am.
The driver was unable to escape and died at the scene.
The driver was travelling north and a large section of safety fencing on the opposite side of the road just south of the truck’s final resting place has been ripped out. One lane of the highway remained closed at midday.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
The truck was one of the 110-strong fleet operated by John L Pierce Pty Ltd, now in its 65th year of business.
The company has depots in Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne, Toowoomba, and Brisbane.
