Youth of the Year

SIX students from Warwick schools vied for the title of Lions Youth of the Year on Wednesday, 19 March.
It is Warwick Lions Club 39th year of running the Youth of the Year, and 50 years since it started in Brisbane. It has been a national contest since 1966.
Three students from Assumption College, two from Scots PGC and one from Warwick State High were nominated for the contest.
After a day of preparation and interviews the six faced judges, who first put to them two impromptu questions: “If you could go back in history, what you change?” and “If you’re starting a new colony, what three things would you take with you, and why?”.
The students then gave a prepared speech, amusing the crowd of 50 Lions Club members, teachers and parents.
Chairwoman of the judging panel Rebecca Mears said that, as always, it was difficult to name a winner among such outstanding young people.
The public speaking award went to Jasmine Whitten of Scots-PGC College.
Timothy Collins of Warwick State High School was named the Warwick Lions Youth of the Year for 2014.
Timothy will progress to the regional judging in Goondiwindi on the 15 March 2014.
