Relay plans kick in

Last year's relay.

PLANNING is under way for this year’s Warwick Relay for Life event to be held at new venue, Redbacks AFL Ground.
Relay media spokesman Colin Clacy said the event won’t be held until 13 and 14 September but the committee is already heavily into the planning stage, hoping to make this year’s event bigger and better.
They are already calling for team nominations.
“The community support for the 2013 Relay For Life exceeded all expectations,” he said.
“We hoped for a dozen teams to slog it out for the 18 hours but in all 26 teams toed the line for the inaugural event. We hoped for a few thousand dollars raised to help the cause (the Cancer Council Queensland) and we raised a massive total exceeding $70,000.”
Mr Clacy said this year the committee’s sights were aimed “at the star” for the event which will carry a “Flower Power” theme.
“With a new venue at Redbacks Oval there will be many new avenues open to us for fundraising, catering, entertainment and team participation,” he said.
Introduced to Australia in 2000, Relay for Life has now become the biggest single not for profit fundraiser in the world with millions taking part.
All money raised goes towards research, support and education programs.
“Relay is an 18-hour event mirrioring a sufferers journey through cancer,” Mr Clacy said.
“Team members take turns circulating a baton around a local oval.
“So if you love a challenge – put together a team of up to 15 people, come along and really help make a difference.”
