Bridge closures hit home

Sandy Creek Road Bridge, Leslie is one of five bridges across the region to be slapped with load limits following safety concerns.

FEEDBACK is being sought on the impact of recent bridge closures and reduced load limits in the Southern Downs.
Southern Downs Regional Council recently closed two bridges and placed load limits on five others in the wake of safey concerns.
Director of engineering services Peter See said council had no other option but to close Kadows Road Bridge and Mullins Road bridge.
“Council conducts regular bridge inspections and has assessed a number of bridges requiring reduced load limits,” he said.
“Council realises this causes inconvenience and we want to collect this information so that we have a comprehensive picture of the impact on local communities.
“Armed with this information we are able to argue our case with other funding bodies such as the state and federal governments.”
Affected residents and business owners are encouraged to phone council on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372) by Monday, 25 August.
“In the meantime we are emphasising to everyone that we need people to adhere to the new load limits,” Mr See said.
