Dreams come true for writing debut

By TANIA PHILLIPS

IMAGINE spending a month in Paris working on your first book – it’s a writer’s dream and it’s just what Warwick-based author Candace Davis did earlier this year.
Candace, who will launch her first book, Love: A Collaborative Memoir, in early November at Cafe Jacqui’s, spent a lot of time compiling and interviewing for her book but when it came to writing it she decided to take herself to Paris to write for a month – where else would you write a book on love?
Inspired by projects like NaNoWriMo, the annual book-writing month, and other 30-day challenges, Candace crowd funded her book earlier this year before leaving for Paris.
Spurred on by turning 30 and wanting to tick some of the things off her bucket list, the former Brisbane-based journalist decided it was time to finally write her book.
She admitted it was a long held dream but it wasn’t the novel she might have expected to write.
Instead it became a memoir focusing on the realities of love in our modern society from a variety of perspectives, including a tattooist, florist, divorcee and high school sweethearts.
“I tried to find a range of stories to highlight the complexities of love in our modern world,” she said.
“I hope it will encourage people to talk about love more and understand it’s a common condition that we all share.”
After extensive research and interviewing she had plenty of stories before she left for Paris – but how to link other people’s stories of love together?
She said eventually the idea of adding her own story into the mix and creating a memoir came to her and the project fell in to place.
And now she is back home for her book launch being held in one of the places she haul her laptop off to, to go and edit – Cafe Jacqui’s.
The launch will see her back at the cafe at Albion Street in Warwick on Sunday 2 November from 4pm to 5pm.
But this time she will have her book in her hand something she admits is “a fantastic feeling”.
The book launch will include an author reading and signing.
Paperback copies of Candace’s book can be purchased online at www.vividpublishing.com.au/love or at the launch for $19.
