Capitals call
THE Southern Downs Regional Council has made a bid for Warwick and Stanthorpe to be considered “regional capitals“.
SDRC has provided a submission detailing the reasons why the Southern Downs hubs should be named regional capitals by the Federal Government’s Senate Standing Committee.
At its general meeting on Tuesday the council agreed that the recognition would bring economic, tourism and financial benefits.

Cuts hurt
THE Southern Downs Regional Council yesterday voiced its opposition to a Federal Government funding freeze.
SDRC Mayor Peter Blundell said a decision to freeze the indexation on Federal Assistance Grant (FAGs) would cost councils across Australia an estimated $925 million.
“The Australian Local Government Association and the state and local government associations are seeking the support of council for advocacy to have the Federal Government reverse the decision to freeze the indexation of FAGs,“ Cr Blundell said.

Highway shut
FOUR people were injured when two vehicles collided at a crash blackspot of the New England Highway near Stanthorpe.
The crash occurred on Tuesday at 12.30pm at the intersection of the New England Highway and Lochiel Road, Dalveen.
An ambulance attended the scene and all four occupants of the cars suffered only minor injuries, police said.
The highway was reopened within an hour.
The accident comes days after five people were sriously injured in a car accident on the same highway.
