A 63-YEAR-OLD man has been found dead in the Main Range National Park near Goomburra, with police embarking on a seven-hour round trip by foot to retrieve the body.
Paramedics and police were alerted of the man’s body on Wednesday 30 September, about 6pm. It was confirmed the man suffered a heart attack while bushwalking with family.
The location of the body made it extremely difficult for police and ambulance services to retrieve the body and they were left with no choice but to go in by foot the following day.
Office in charge Jamie Deacon said the operation was a joint effort that went well into the night.
“It took in excess of seven hours in a round trip through very rugged and inhospitable terrain. We had to physically carry him through very rugged country,” he said.
“We initially sent up a party of eight to locate the deceased and commence operations and then we sent up another six when it was confirmed.”
The recovery involved Warwick police as well as surrounding officers from Killarney, Yangan and Search and Rescue from Toowoomba.
The man’s body was then finally transported when they reached the top of the range on the Cunningham Highway.
