LOCAL Warwick woman Sharni Collins added to the rodeo trophy cabinet of the Southern Downs, taking out her event in only her second attempt.
The ladies poly buck jump is not a common event around Australia, but it was something that Sharni always wanted to try.
“Dad always kept saying no,” she said.
After continuously pushing it back, and having her son, she made her debut in last year’s Warwick Rodeo.
“I thought what the hell and gave it a crack last year, and decided to do it again this year,” she said.
Claiming a second place in her debut last year, Sharni didn’t have too many doubts about returning this year.
She walked away with the top prize this year, and it was an impressive result given she doesn’t really get to practice.
“I ride horses usually, but don’t really practice for it,” she said.
“I was hoping for a win and I was just hoping to stay on.”
Her win did come at a cost though with an awkward fall, meaning she broke the bones between her thumb and wrist in seven different places.
“Last year the pickup men got me and I didn’t even fall. This year, I happened to keep going and ended up coming off and landed the wrong way,” she said.
“But they were clean breaks.”
Sharni said she’d see if she’d be back next year, but added it wouldn’t be the injury that would scare her away.
She also wanted to thank fellow Warwick local and cousin Mark Collins for getting her poly saddle just right for the event.
