Mowing gets cut from sports ground ‘extras’

Level playing fields were on the agenda at a press conference at Stanthorpe today.

THE Southern Downs Regional Council says all it’s trying to do when it comes to cutting grass at public reserves is to create a level playing field – and that’s exactly what the Stanthorpe Sports Association believes it’s entitled to.
The sports association and the council have been at loggerheads of late over mowing of the McGlew Street sports ovals, which the association leases from the council.
Despite every other sporting group in the region taking responsibility for cutting their own grass, usually through the use of volunteer labour, the Stanthorpe group is adamant it has a lease which requires the council to keep the grass under control.
At a media conference held in Stanthorpe this morning, mayor Tracy Dobie and Cr Yve Stocks, who manages council’s Events, Sport and Recreation portfolio made it clear the days of council undertaking all the mowing of the McGlew Street facility were well and truly over.
