WARWICK Police and Transport Compliance Officers from the Department of Transport and Main Roads have been busy conducting vehicle inspections in Warwick today, Thursday 24 November.
Officers set up camp on Palmerin Street this morning conducting the random checks on passing vehicles.
Inspector Brian Cannon of the Warwick police told the Free Times the inspections were part of a “rolling program” being conducted across the Warwick and Stanthorpe regions.
“It’s a roving situation where police are joining forces with the Transport Compliance officers to conduct vehicle safety checks,” Insp Cannon said.
“A lot of it is simply education – ensuring people undertake regular checks of tyre pressure and electrical systems including blinkers and lights.
“We do at times get complacent about these issues – the checks are to ensure that proper maintenance is being conducted on vehicles of any age.”
The officers have even been checking window washer bottle levels and while Insp Cannon said the issuing of a defect notice for a lack of water would be “extremely unusual” it was a basic safety issue.
Defect notices are not fines but can affect the ability of a vehicle owner to operate their vehicle depending on the severity of the problem.
Fines do apply if defect notices are not complied with in the specified timeframe.
