Get set for a hot one

By Jeremy Sollars

WITH hot temperatures forecast for much of south-west Queensland today and in coming days, the Rural Fire Service (RFS) is urging all residents to remain vigilant.
RFS Regional Manager Tony Johnstone said very high fire danger was forecast for the Maranoa, Warrego, Darling Downs and Granite Belt areas today and into the weekend.
“During these heightened fire conditions we’re asking residents to take extra care, be alert, and help to prevent bushfires,” Mr Johnstone said.
“Warm temperatures combined with low humidity and increased winds create conditions where fires may develop quickly, spread rapidly and become more intense.”
Mr Johnstone said residents should prepare their homes and properties early, so that no-one was caught off guard.
“Make sure you finalise your preparations around the home and visit the RFS website to download and practice your Bushfire Survival Plan,” he said.
“In the coming days, be careful when operating machinery in grassed areas and never throw cigarette butts out of the car window.”
Mr Johnstone said landowners who had conducted hazard reduction burns should make sure residual fires were contained so that they would not escape.
“Under the forecast conditions, unattended or mismanaged fires may create sparks and cause fires to spread quickly,” he said.
“We’re asking residents to be on the lookout, stay vigilant and report any bushfires to triple-zero (000) immediately.”
