Accidental shooting victim remains stable

Police say charges are “unlikely in the near future” in relation to the accidental shooting of a five year old boy on a property at Cottonvale north of Stanthorpe in the first week of January.
The boy remains in Brisbane’s Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital after two rounds of surgery on a bullet wound to the face, with a hospital spokeswoman telling the Free Times today, Thursday 18 January, that he remains in a stable condition.
It is alleged that the boy was accidentally shot by an older cousin late on the afternoon of Tuesday 2 January.
A Queensland Police Media statement released the following Friday stated that “preliminary inquiries indicate around 4.30pm (on the Tuesday) two boys were in a shed when one of the boys accessed an unsecured firearm”.
“The firearm discharged and the boy sustained a serious injury to the face.
“The weapon involved is registered to a Queensland firearms licence holder.
“Police urge licence holders to be mindful of their obligations under the Weapons Act to store weapons safely, ideally in a locked gun safe.”
