Costume workshop sparked creativity and fun

Young Warwick people are working hard on their costumes for the grand Youth Week Parade through Rose City Shopping Centre on Friday 14 April.

Some are going to great lengths to design and make sophisticated creations.

Last week, young people’s agency Headspace, hosted a costume making workshop which attracted 10 keen attendees.

They arrived full of ideas at the Palmerin St Headspace centre.

Lian Gilchrist, a Headspace Youth Reference Group member, took them through the concept and design process.

The Youth Reference Group comprises members aged 16-25 who are passionate about improving mental health for young people living in the Warwick.

Members like Lian also work with Headspace and the local community to increase mental health awareness, reduce stigma and encouraging getting help early.

She also helps to promote access to Headspace services, while building strong relationships with other young people, their family and friends.

Lian’s involvement in the Youth Week Cosplay Parade has helped her peer group to embrace their creativity and have lots of fun.

The Youth Week Parade will wend its way through Rose City Shopping Centre, out into Palmerin Street and over the road to the Town Hall for a huge After Party with live music and free pizza.

Lian has been making costumes for a couple of years.

“It all started when Mum and I made mermaid tails to go over mono-fins which we used in swimming training to improve technique,” Lian said.

“Then I discovered the furry community when I met others on social media who created costumes.

“Going around in a costume is great fun. I get to play around and make people smile and laugh, especially little kids who get super excited.”

Her favourite costume is Espin the black bird who is due for a revamp in time for the Cosplay Parade.

If you missed the Headspace workshop, don’t despair.

“Search for tutorials on google,” Lian advised. “Look through some other creators and just see what works the best for you with the materials you have.”
