Tenterfield High School steers the way to hoof and hook

Tenterfield’s Beef Bonanza starts tomorrow with a prime show of stock. Parading tomorrow morning at the Tenterfield Saleyards, this Year 11 Primary Industry class will turn out a good showing of cattle.
Tenterfield High School will contribute 60 steers to this year’s event with as many agricultural students taking part in the parading and junior judging.
Teacher Philip Jones told the Southern Free Times that these steers (pictured), 14 in all, are bound for the `hoof and hook event.’
“They won’t be coming home,” he said with a touch of sentimentality. “So there are usually a few tears at the end of the day.”
Agriculture as a subject is still the most popular subject at the school and Tenterfield High School has a strong tradition at Beef Bonanza, and usually win the most successful exhibit.
Among the many things students learn, apart from the washing and grooming, are the finer points of beef growing.
“Students are taught about feed cattle and analyse grain rations as part of their studies.”
The school agriculture plot will have more steers delivered next week; that lot will be fattened up for the Brisbane Ekka.
