Council supports local businesses

More than 70 per cent of goods purchased by Southern Downs Regional Council in the past 12 months have come from local businesses.
In the 12 months to January 15, purchasing figures show that 71.49 per cent of council supplies have been sourced from locally owned or operated businesses.
Total expenditure for this period was $27.2 million.
Mayor Ron Bellingham said this demonstrated once again how much the council puts back into the community.
“Wherever it makes sense for the ratepayer, we will choose to go with a competitive local supplier, so that more local dollars stay local,” Cr Bellingham said.
Goods and services from legal advice to excavation supply to traffic control and even toilet paper have come from local providers.
He said it was not possible to purchase some goods and services locally due to legislative requirements, lack of local suppliers, or competitive group buying for local government.
“Clearly we have to weigh up the benefits to the community as a whole,” the Mayor said.
“We must be able to buy the right goods and services for a particular job at a competitive price, and will consider a local supplier that meets those needs.”
