Residents clear their rubbish

The Southern Downs Regional Council’s kerbside cleanup campaign in the southern region has been completed, with residents taking full advantage of this great opportunity to remove any accumulated rubbish.
The council workers were kept busy over the three weeks of the campaign, with more than 100 cubic metres of waste collected from footpaths. This was made up of 29.25 cubic metres of green waste, 29.3 cubic metres of scrap metal and 50 cubic metres of general waste.
“It’s great to see so many taking advantage of the opportunity to let the council clean up their unwanted items for them,” said the council’s manager environmental services, Tim O’Brien.
“As much of the rubbish collected as possible was separated to be reused or recycled,” Mr O’Brien said.
“In fact, more than half of all items collected were able to be recycled, which is a great result.”
Kerbside cleanups are carried out in the northern and southern town areas on alternate years to assist residents to keep their properties free of unwanted items and to remove mosquito breeding containers.
The northern region will benefit from the Cleanup Campaign in 2013, with the southern region to have their turn again in 2014.
