Lucy Culliton IMAGES: R. IAN LLOYD

Australian Painters Photographed by R. Ian Lloyd takes us on an exclusive behind-the-scenes photographic tour of a variety of Australian artists working in their studio environments, providing a unique insight into the minds, moods and creative processes of some of the nation’s most acclaimed painters.
R. Ian Lloyd, renown for his National Geographic work, examines through large photographic portraits the fascinating detail of the individual artist’s space; whether it be an inner city loft, a kitchen table or the sandy earth of the outback.
Ian Lloyd and writer John McDonald visited the studios of painters and asked 18 standard questions dealing with the process of painting.
The responses were surprising, revealing, humorous, insightful and sometimes contradictory. The best answers were edited down from 50 hours of interviews into a 103-minute DVD that lets the painters speak for themselves about their studios, their work routine and how they go about making their art.
The exhibition features 61 Australian artists including Lucy Culliton, James Gleeson, Margaret Olley, John Olsen, Jenny Sages, William Robinson, Tim Storrier and Judy Napangardi Watson.
The accompanying exhibition book and DVD, STUDIO: Australian Painters on the Nature of Creativity by R. Ian Lloyd with text and interviews by John McDonald, have both been highly successful and reprinted since the launch in 2007.
Warwick Art Gallery director Karina Devine has been looking forward to the exhibition’s arrival in Warwick since first seeing it at the Queensland State Library in 2008.
“I have seen many, many exhibitions as visiting galleries is part of my job and STUDIO is one of the most inspirational exhibitions I have seen. I am thrilled that it will now be displayed at Warwick Art Gallery,” Ms Devine said.
The exhibition was opened on Saturday, September 1, by R. Ian Lloyd who is travelling from Sydney to Warwick to attend the event.
The regional tour of STUDIO: Australian Painters Photographed by R. Ian Lloyd is managed by Museums and Galleries NSW as part of their touring exhibitions program, which aims to provide galleries and museums in regional NSW and throughout Australia with access to high quality and contemporary visual art and craft exhibitions.
