Pens filling up for campdraft

Spectators watch as riders cut out and pen their animals.

Entries are filling up for the Stanthorpe Campdraft Sub-committee’s Team Penning and Practice Campdraft fundraising weekend.
This year the funds raised during the weekend are in support of the committee’s entrant for the Stanthorpe Agricultural Society’s showgirl competition, Alyssa Halford.
The team penning day is on Saturday, November 3, starting at 8am. Riders in a team of three have to cut three same-collared cattle out of 21 head and pen them up the other end of the yard in two minutes. It is a competition that is very entertaining to watch.
This year a separate junior competition for Under 14s is being held and, for the all ages competition, there will be a final at the end of the day. The teams with the top ten times will be eligible to run in the final.  Prize money and prizes are up for grabs.
Saturday night entertainment will commence with a Farmer’s Challenge, where teams of three (two males, one female) prove their prowess at basic skills such as building a yard from cattle panels, putting a tyre on a ute and carting hay.  A full Farmer’s Challenge program is available on the website or from the Secretary. There are still openings available for teams.
Ty and Kate will provide dinner music with a little bit of karaoke thown in, just to make the night interesting. If you are not competing but would like to join the dinner, please let the secretary know, for catering purposes.
The practice campdraft is on Sunday, November 4, starting at 7am. This year four experienced drafters will provide some theory and hands-on instruction prior to riders entering the camp. This will give potential drafters a fuller understanding about what campdrafting is about, its objectives, basic rules, conduct and tips on how to be competitive in this sport.
Further information including a flyer, program, farmer’s challenge map and entry forms are available on the website at www.granitenet.com.au/groups/sport/campdraftor from the Secretary, Paula Boatfield at pbboatfield@bigpond.com or 07 4683 3119. If you can’t come to compete, come down to watch, it should be a very entertaining couple of days.
