The Spin

Cricket Australia’s rotation policy is creating debate and comment in plenty of quarters. Shane (waning star) Warne has had his two bob’s worth. Ian Chappell also appears not a fan. Punter Ponting seems to think it’s a good bet and Michael Clarke – well naturally, as current captain he is, as you would expect, in the good idea corner.

Of course with Australia’s dismal performance with bat and ball in the last couple of ODI games, it is no wonder there is criticism coming the selectors’ way.

Perhaps they should be looking further afield – there are Queenslanders aplenty putting their hands up for a spot after the Heat came from the clouds to touch up the Scorchers last weekend to end the Big Bash.

Closer to home though, there is a local bloke who last weekend put plenty of sizzle into the game between Colts and Inglewood.

Thirty-four-year-old Rod Hansen, who had to wait 19 seasons to notch up a fifer in the Warwick competition, proved that, like good wine, swing bowlers improve with age. Last weekend he stunned his opponents and plenty of others taking seven wickets for zip. Yes 7/0. It was his first bowling performance since taking three wickets in last season’s grand final win.

Wait on – there might be something in this rotation, resting policy. Someone call Warnie, Chappelli or maybe the call should go to John Invererity.

All I can say is, well done Rod. Keep on doing what you’re doing and whatever you do, don’t give up that cherry.
