Cooler months ahead and Lighthouse Centre needs more support

Life can throw up many challenges from financial pressures to health complications, and sometimes asking for help can be a person’s last resort.

Fortunately help is available thanks to volunteer organisations such as the Lighthouse Community Centre on Guy St in Warwick, which offers a beam of light to those experiencing darker times.

The centre was established by a former pastor of Warwick Church of Christ, Judith Kunkell who in the year 2000 noticed an unwavering need for assistance.

13-years on and her dream of a community centre to address that need is alive and well, but as cooler months begin to take hold, and with the centre already experience a growing need, Lighthouse is turning to the community for some help of its own.

Lighthouse manager Barry Heffernan said the centre was in preparation mode with the need for warm clothes, blankets, food and more volunteers – all making the top of the list.

The centre is currently supported by consistent food donations from Warwick Woolworths, as well as bread donations from Brumby’s Warwick.

“We’re hoping even more local businesses and individuals can help with donations this year, in particular food and warm clothing and blankets which are in big demand,” he said.

Long-time Lighthouse volunteers Glenda Shanahan and Mary Cussen said the need was always high.

“Our blanket numbers are very low and we’re always looking for food donations,” Ms Shanahan said.

The pair said they find comfort in helping others, but worry when there’s little available.

“I get a real kick out of helping those in need, it’s a very fulfilling role being a volunteer,” Ms Cussen said.

Anyone in need of assistance can contact Lighthouse or drop by the office to speak with a qualified supervisor including Mr Heffernan.

In order to receive assistance, residents must be registered with Human Services (Centrelink) and provide details.

All conversations are strictly confidential.

Bargain hunters can also visit the centre for a Monster Garage Sale this Saturday, March 9 at 47 Guy St.
