Prepare for a fun-filled weekend at Killnarey this month with a rodeo and derby as part of the Flood Recovery Weekend.

By JONATHON HOWARD

THIS year’s floods saw the 2013 Killarney Show cancelled, but a bright spark is on the horizon for Killarney this month with the announcement of a Flood Recovery Weekend.
The show committee has announced the decision to hold the rodeo and smash-up derby as part of the May camp draft weekend on 17-19 May.
Killarney Show President, David Thomson said the Flood Recovery Weekend was an opportunity to celebrate the resilience of Southern Downs communities.
“This Flood Recovery Weekend will ensure the Killarney community doesn’t miss out on all the show fun,” Mr Thomson said.
“It’s a chance for the community to come together and show that we can get through and we won’t be beaten.”
The Flood Recovery Weekend will be a fund-raiser of the Killarney Show Society, with a jackpot rodeo and smash-up derby; as well as dinner and magic show by Eric Summons.
The jackpot rodeo will start at 5.30pm on Friday, 17 May, with barrel racing, mutton busting, poddy, steer and bull riding.
Entry is free on Friday night, with the bar and barbecue in operation.
Mr Thomson advised that nominations for steer and bull riding were required by Wednesday, 15 May. The nominations can be directed to Jan Hamilton by phoning 4666 4111.
The Killarney Smash-up Derby, being held as part of the Friday night entertainment, is attracting competitors from far afield with a contingent of drivers from Toowoomba.
Saturday night will be dinner and a show at the Killarney Recreation Club; featuring Eric Summons as MC and magician.
A two-course buffet dinner will be followed by a magic show.
Music will be provided by Aperitif Jazz Ensemble featuring Teri Welles.
Bookings are essential and tickets can be purchased at Killarney Vet Surgery for $18 adults and $10 for children under 12.
The campdraft will be running over three days, from Friday to Sunday, to “recover” the one-day show draft. For more information phone 0459 408 788.
