New meters may herald increases

WaterMetersTHE water meter located near every property boundary measures the amount of water supplied to that property.
The readings on the water meter are used to determine the charges which appear on water rates notices.
According to Water and Waste Water manager, Tendekai Mapeza, over time, and with normal use, water meters do tend to wear out. When that happens the meter is often no longer accurate and will not properly record the actual water use, or they may even fail and stop working altogether.
Water meters can last for up to 30 years depending on the type, installation and usage, but generally should be replaced every 10-20 years, as this is normally recognised as their economic life.
“A lot of our existing water meters are reaching the end of their lifespan,” Mr Mapeza said.
“As a result, Council is currently developing an appropriate renewal program so that, during the next few years, each meter will be replaced with a new unit.”
Residents may notice a change in their next water bill after their old meter has been replaced as the new meter will be recording a more accurate amount. This may be a higher amount.
