Empowering schools

THE Newman Government is inviting schools throughout the state to take part in the second round of the $21 million Independent Public Schools initiative.
Education, Training and Employment Minister John-Paul Langbroek today visited Kirwan State High School in the state’s north, which became one of the first Independent Public Schools in 2013.
“We’re looking for state schools throughout Queensland which are interested in putting up their hands to become Independent Public Schools (IPS) and have a greater say in local decision-making,” Mr Langbroek said.
“The best people to make decisions for students are principals, parents and communities, so we’re helping them cut through the red tape with greater autonomy and more of a say in how their schools are run.
“More control over decision making at a local level will help empower our school communities to deliver quality education and build a great future for our kids.”
Mr Langbroek called for expressions of interest to add 34 schools next year to the existing 26 schools that were already part of the popular initiative.
“The Kirwan State High School community has really benefited from increased autonomy and a greater say in resource management,” he said.
“Becoming an IPS means principals will also have greater flexibility to tailor the curriculum to suit the needs of their students, such as incorporating International Baccalaureate and gateway programs, centres of excellence or other extracurricular activities.
“The freedom to directly recruit teachers means the school has been able to build an innovative team to drive projects like its award-winning literacy and technology programs.
“Students also benefit from the school’s connection to the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy, which helps deliver vocational education and training for employment in the resources sector.”
Mr Langbroek said schools should consult with parents, teachers, P&Cs and the local community to gauge local interest in becoming an Independent Public School.
“We aim to have 120 schools operating under this model by 2016, to help us deliver the very best education to Queensland kids.”
Schools have until 30 August to lodge their applications and successful schools will be announced before the end of Term 4 this year.
