Allora residents call for flood levee

RESIDENTS living in flood-prone areas around Allora have written to the Southern Downs Regional Council with a plan to secure the town from future flood events.

Residents living on Raff and Jubb streets suffered severe flooding during the past three flood events after Dalrymple Creek broke its banks.
Those residents are now calling for the installation of a 1.5-metre levee bank from the park adjacent to the swimming pool in Raff Street, running alongside the golf course in Jubb Street and finishing at the intersection with Herbert Street.
The letter to council was also backed by a petition signed by 13 residents.
The petition was expected to be considered by councillors during the monthly general meeting in Stanthorpe Council Chambers on Wednesday 31 July.
The submitted letter outlined some of the resident’s concerns which included, “severe property damage” and “health risks within our soil and during the clean up afterwards”.
“The flooding to all these properties could be eliminated by installing a 1.5 metre levee bank,” the letter read.
“This would only need an earth wall construction and would not be an eyesore or hinder anyone’s view nor would it inconvenience anyone on these properties.”
The letter and petition were expected to be passed on to the council’s engineering services director Peter See for assessment and costing, pending a council vote.
