Orienteering event this Sunday

The “Gordon Country” property in the Goomburra Valley, east of Allora, will be the venue for an orienteering event being organised by the Southern Downs’ Bullecourt Boulder Bounders Club.
More than 50 orienteers from the two clubs on the Darling Downs are expected to take part in the event this Sunday.
Publicity officer for the Bullecourt Boulder Bounders, Liz Bourne, said the Goomburra property was first mapped and used for orienteering as part of the Asia-Pacific Orienteering Championships held on the Southern Downs in July 2000 and has been a popular venue for local orienteering events ever since.
“It combines eucalypt forested slopes and open grazing land along Dalrymple Creek, making it ideal for both beginners as well as experienced orienteers,” she said.
“We expect to also have a good roll-up of our juniors at this event as it will be the last competition for them ahead of the Queensland Schools Orienteering Championships, which are being held in Brisbane at the end of the month.”
She said that, apart from courses for club members, Sunday’s event would also have short, easy courses for beginners and there will be instruction available on basic map reading and navigational skills.
“Anyone interested in trying out orienteering is most welcome to attend. No special gear is required, although sturdy footwear and a hat are recommended. Compasses may be borrowed at the event.”
Starting times will be between 9am and 11am. The assembly area will be signposted off Inverramsey Road, about 22km from Goomburra.
