Training in wildlife care

Stanthorpe is in for a real treat, with the Granite Belt Wildlife Carers hosting a two-day training weekend on November 17 and 18, being held at the Broadwater CWA hall, just west of Stanthorpe.
The two-day event is being presented by Dr Anne Fowler, one of the most well respected wildlife veterinarians in Australia.
Anne Fowler graduated in Veterinary Science at Sydney University after completing an Honours year investigating Vitamin D Metabolism in Marsupials. She worked as a veterinarian in the Hunter Valley where she became involved with wildlife through Native Animal Trust Fund. When she moved to Victoria, she obtained a wildlife shelter permit and began teaching about wildlife care to foster carers and shelters regionally and through the Victorian University of Technology. Anne has gained her Memberships in the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in both Avian Health and Wildlife Medicine. Anne teaches on wildlife care to carer groups throughout Australia. She has worked at the University of Sydney Wildlife Health and Conservation Centre, for RSPCA NSW managing the vet clinics in the Hunter Valley and Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria. She is currently working as an emergency veterinarian at the Pet Emergency and Specialist Centre.
Saturday’s course is: How to assess and treat injured wildlife in the first 24hrs.
This course is suitable for the general public, as they are the ones who call us with the injured native wildlife, or anyone who is generally interested in wildlife.
Sunday’s course is: Husbandry and rehabilitation of marsupials, with a focus on macropods and possums. This course is open to the public, as we need more volunteers to help care for the rising number of injured and orphaned animals coming into care.
The training weekend is open to the general public and we encourage anyone who has an interest in wildlife to attend. The cost is $30 per day and this includes morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, training manual, gift package and tickets in the lucky door prize.
