It was most interesting to read a letter from Mr Tom Edgar, “Waste Woes”, in The Southern Free Times on December 29. It was more interesting to have had noted in another place, the old “Australia as a Republic” idea refloated because of the ailing health of Prince Phillip. This writer was taken to task by Tom Edgar on the subject of Australia as a Republic in the Free Times on June 25, 2009. He then proclaimed he was a naturalised Australian, who owed no allegiance to the Queen of England. Mr Edgar, who originated in England, has every right to lecture me and anyone else who took enormous pleasure in witnessing the tens of thousands who paid homage to the Queen and Prince Phillip during their recent visit. He is also entitled to lecture Councils about their perceived waste disposal methods. However, far from being humbled by an attack two and one half years ago, this writer was open to the recent Field attack that set up the return to the letters pages by Tom Edgar. That Prince Phillip is well again is wonderful news for his family, and it really is in the theatre of the absurd that real Australians would embrace that hare brained intrigue that surrounds the making of this country into a Republic. Real Australians are not that easily overawed by any referendums that are, as I write, being prepared to produce the first President of the Republic of Australia.
