Winning bid faces scrutiny

TENTERFIELD Shire Council has been called upon to explain why it did not call for competitive tenders for the $2.2 million beautification of Rouse Street.
Tenterfield resident Robert Walker said council had awarded an outside architect the entire works despite council having its own civil, structural and mechanical engineers who would have the ability to evaluate tenders.
“These able people should be used to ensure that there were at least three competitive tenders called for,” he said.
“Further, it has been reported that major key components have not been included in the $2.2 million package.”
Mr Walker said he was now requesting a meeting with the council to clarify the matters prior to the Tenterfield Rates and Anti Amalgamation Forum (TRAAF) public meeting this Sunday, 21 July.
The meeting will be held at 3pm in the Royal Hotel dining room to discuss proposed rate rises.
Mr Walker said a vote will also be put forward on a “notice of motion” designed to bring the Tenterfield Shire Council to account.
“I will update you on progress of this proposed meeting as soon as I have spoken to the Mayor and/or CEO,” he said.
“In the meantime, I believe this emerging matter is of major public interest.”
