Joyce McKeen, a loved and much valued member of the Bridge Club for 17 years has announced that she is moving to Kingaroy for family reasons.
Throughout her time with the club Joyce has quietly set a benchmark for desirable conduct at the bridge table. She has been unfailingly courteous and pleasant.
At various times, Joyce has also assisted the club with her computer skills.
We wish Joyce every happiness in this new phase of her life.
Just a couple of weeks ago Joyce, with regular bridge partner Barbara Reid, won the East/West section on Handicap. They scored well on Board 16 (above) on Friday, 16 June. With partner unable to help, Joyce (South) battled against East/West’s vigorous bidding in spades and had to reach 4D before they gave up. Not surprisingly, West led the Queen of spades and continued with another spade after the Queen held.
This was ruffed in South’s hand, which allowed Joyce to draw her opponents’ trumps. At some stage early in the piece, Joyce sneaked a heart to dummy’s King. West was either asleep or decided to give declarer the chance to finesse the Jack of hearts and so played a low heart. Joyce wasn’t falling for that and called for the King. Joyce now had no losers in hearts. When she then played the top two clubs, West’s Jack fell, leaving the Queen as the only club winner for East. Seven diamonds, one heart and three clubs gave North/South eleven tricks and a top score of 150.
