Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) has approved the opening of community consultation over the naming of a street in the Warwick Solar Estate.

Warwick Solar Estate put forward the application, requesting the new road at 18 Miller Street, Warwick be named as Sunshine Court.

Sunshine Court meets the criteria for naming a street, however Councillor Jo McNally raised that the submission to council had the same name three times, and this may have been an issue if there was a road with a similar name in the region.

She stated that rules for naming roads are that “you can’t have anything with a similar name throughout the region, doesn’t matter if it’s in Warwick or Stanthorpe, if the other road’s in an opposite area, we won’t duplicate the name”.

She stated that if the region had a road named Sunshine Street, for instance, this name would not be able to be used.

She stated she would like something on the forms stating that applicants needed to submit three names so that if there is a similar name within the region, there are still options.

Staff said they would take the advice on board.

The Mayor stated that maybe when they reviewed the policy this could be reflected in it.

Councillor McNally also noted that the development is an off-grid one, using solar, and that was why they sought to use the name Sunshine Court.

The name will be available for public comment for a minimum period of 21 calendar days.

It will be advertised in the relevant local media, with written advice to adjacent landholders and to any other stakeholders for input. Internal departments will also have input.

At the end of the consultation period, all responses will be presented at a Council meeting where a suitable name will be adopted.

The decision will be made based on both the applicable criteria and the outcomes of the public consultation.

The motion was moved by Councillor Andrew Gale and seconded by Councillor Cynthia McDonald.
