Town clock to remain out of sync

By Dominique Tassell

The clock at Warwick Town Hall is currently out by just under 15 minutes and will remain that way for the foreseeable future.

A Council spokesperson stated that “due to the heritage of the Warwick Town Hall clock, the costs to repair the timing mechanism and the bell striking alignment are significant”.

“Council is now looking to determine if there is any grant funding available for the repair.

“Regrettably, the clock will be out of timing and bell striking alignment for the foreseeable future.”

The clock was also out of alignment last year, as reported on 7 October 2021.

It was over an hour out of sync.

At the time, a Council spokesperson said they were working to rectify the problem.

They stated that a new part had been ordered to repair the issue, but they did not have a delivery date.

They further stated that Council was considering refurbishment works to the Town Hall clock as part of the 2022/23 FY budget.

It is unclear if work was carried out last year however, the clock was working and on time until recently.

Council was asked to clarify this but has not responded.

The clock town was installed in 1892 and was not originally part of the Town Hall’s design.

Ratepayers voted in December 1887 for the addition of a clock tower and it was then incorporated into the design of the building.

The bell in the clock tower was reportedly taken from St Mary’s Church.
