Southern Downs residents will have a unique opportunity to experience ethnic food as part of a Multicultural Festival in Warwick on Sunday August 21.

The event at St Mark’s Hall from 1 pm to 5 pm is open to the public with cooking demonstrations and a chance to sample dishes from South Korea, China, The Philippines, Afghanistan, and Nigeria.

Southern Downs Refugee and Migrant Network (SDRAMN) received a grant from the Queensland Government to help celebrate Multicultural Month celebrations during August.

SDRAMN spokeswoman Anne Wilson said Acciona also supported the event through its McIntyre Wind Farm Project community engagement program.

Ms Wilson said the event would include culinary tasting and entertainment from St Mary’s School Choir, the Filipino Dance group and local folk singers, The Goodwills.

“We will have four local cooks and a visiting cook from Brisbane,” Ms Wilson said. “Each will delight us with a traditional dish and give a little background to its origins.”

SDRAMN are asking for a gold coin donation, with all proceeds going to the Hazara Women for Change.

“This group of Afghan women in Melbourne are supporting orphan children in Kabul and supporting the education of girls in various parts of Afghanistan through Home Tutoring,” Ms Wilson said.

The Multicultural Month event follows SDRAMN’s successful Welcome Walk for Refugees held in June.

SDRAMN president Bob Wilson said the Southern Downs has always had a rich background of migrant settlement.

“The Multicultural Festival is one way we can remind people how people from other countries add to the diversity of our community.”
