Around the rinks

Jill Barnes was all smiles on Wednesday after winning The Cherry Tree Coffee and Dining single Stableford trophy, which was her second successive win of late.

Golfers in Stanthorpe played a stroke event for the Apple and Grape Harvest Festival cups on Saturday, 24 February, sponsored by Crisp’s Coaches.

A good field which included a number of visitors, from as far away as South Australia, competed for honours on the day. A fairly heavy rain shower later in the day may have dampened some spirits but all the field managed to complete their round.

The men’s event was won by Scott Constable with nett 70 which was two shots better than the rest. A great result for Constable as he plays with an AGU handicap of two and his 72 off the stick was a par round. Alan Kerr has been studying hard of late to get his game back in order and was rewarded with runner up on nett 72. In the run down, Phillip Shaw (Beerwah GC) with nett 72 and Michael Dufton on nett 73 both featured.

The ladies event was won by Nikki Waterworth with nett 73 which was four shots clear of the field. After the count back, Lyn Ludlow collected for runner up with nett 77. Filomena Silver, also on nett 77, and Lisa Stuart with nett 79 featured in the ladies run down.

Ladies individual hole prizes went to Trish McKenna (Maryborough GC) at 1/10 and Filomena Silver at 5/14. Ladies pin shots were claimed by Lisa Stuart at 12 and Jill Milburn (Maryborough GC) at 17.

Men’s pro-pins were won by Alan Kerr at 1/10, Jason Bacon at 5/14 and Graham Senz (Branxton GC) at 9/18. Pin shots went to Barry Jones at three, Michael Dufton at 12 and Matt Waterworth at 17.

This was a great start for Apple and Grape Harvest Festival golf events with another couple to come up in the week. Wednesday Golfers will play their mid-week event on the 28 February and on Friday 1 March is the Apple and Grape Harvest Festival two ball Ambrose, also sponsored by Crisp’s Coaches. The time sheet for this event is on the board at the club house, intending players are not able to book for this event on line.

There will not be a golf event on Saturday 2 March, all will be down town for the Festival.

Rayner wins the front nine

Stanthorpe Sporters golfers played the front nine on Sunday 25 February. Those who turned out for the morning were greeted with a cloudy sky but this soon cleared allowing the event to proceed.

Stew Rayner had best score of the day, nett 27, to be the winner. A few bogies to start his round, but a solid finish ensured the win.

A good round from Mark Lynam put him into the runners-up position after he returned a nett 28 for the round. Lynam had one bad hole, a double bogey at the sixth hole which was probably very costly, being only one shot behind.

Dick Hilton also returned a nett 28 but the cut of the cards did not favour him so he settled for the run-down. Some recompense however, he did manage to have the low gross score on the day, 40 for the nine holes.

Only one pin shot on the front nine, the short par three third hole, a mere 125 metres long. Everyone was close but no one managed to keep it on the green. No takers for the ball on offer for the NTP.

Sporters golfers will be playing a two-ball ambrose nine hole competition on Sunday 17 March, the day being the Maureen Bates Memorial event. Time sheet for the day is on the clip board at the club so get a partner organised and enter nominations on the time sheet. Sunday 3 March will not be a Sporters event as the Apple and Grape Festival is ongoing on this day, so Sporters re-assemble the following Sunday 10 March. Usual tee off time at 8 am.
