Warwick residents have taken up the mantle of solidarity with refugees, actively participating in the national BigWalk4Refugees project, which aims to cover 16,500 kilometres – equivalent to a lap around Australia.

This grassroots initiative seeks to shed light on the challenges faced by refugees and asylum seekers nationwide.

The BigWalk4Refugees builds upon the momentum of previous public walks held throughout Australia, highlighting the plight of refugees and asylum seekers. The Southern Downs Refugee and Migrant Network (SDRAMN) spearheaded public walks in Warwick during Refugee Week in June of both 2022 and 2023.

Anne Wilson, spokesperson for SDRAMN, emphasised the primary goal of the walk: to draw attention to the plight of the approximately 10,000 asylum seekers in Australia who still lack a permanent visa.

“On Palm Sunday, 24 March all are welcome to join the last stage of our local walk commencing at 10.00 am at Tiddalik in Federation Park for a short stroll along the Condamine River and then on to the Band Rotunda in Leslie Park,” Ms Wilson said.

“Every step counts, whether it’s a trip to the shops, a morning run, walking the dog, or participating in group events.”

The culmination of the walk will be marked by a rally outside Parliament House in Canberra on Tuesday, March 26, amplifying the voices advocating for refugees’ rights.

Despite the Federal Government’s reduction in the number of individuals caught in visa limbo, many asylum seekers in Australia continue to face uncertain futures. Some have resided in the country for a decade without securing a permanent visa, rendering them ineligible for vital services such as Medicare and access to higher education.

Participants in the BigWalk4Refugees aim to shine a light on the challenges confronting refugees trapped in bureaucratic limbo, hindered from rebuilding their lives, ensuring a better future for their children, and reuniting with family overseas.

Looking ahead, SDRAMN plans to host a fundraising film afternoon on 16 June at the Churches of Christ Auditorium as part of Refugee Week 2024, furthering their commitment to supporting refugees and fostering community awareness.
