Warwick Water Rats gear up for season

Warwick's A grade men's rugby union team (minus Dean Cullen, player coach and prop, and number eight Jolame Vai who were at the Dalby Hospital getting Vai's head stitch after the trial game).

The Warwick Rugby Union Club are gearing up for their second trial game and first home game of the year on 13 April following the launch of the 60th season of the Downs Rugby Risdon Cup late last month.

The trial against the Gatton Blackpigs will double as a Sponsors Day.

“We want toe welcome all of our sponsors down to our club and remind them of what they are investing their hard-earned money into,” Warwick Rugby Union Club president Tess Cullen said.

She said things were looking good following the big launch at Dalby on 23 March.

“It was a really good showcase of country rugby,” the president said.

She said the day featured a pre-season tournament to mark 60 years of the Risdon Cup and allowed all the clubs to come together to launch the season.

“It was a great day,” she said.

“We won against South Burnett Thrashers 14-5. Our tries were scored by Dean Cullen and Hamish Swift.

“A fantastic result for us – we were a little nervous going in because they were a top four team last year and were very fit and fast.

“Everyone involved with the club is feeling quite invigorated after this and keen to make this year a really good one.”

Coach Dean Cullen said he was pleased with the performance of the side.

“Standout performances this week from Semisi Qaranivalu for his strong running through the opposition backline, Terry Dennien for some strong carries and a great break up the midfield and Jonacani Bituleka for some outstanding defence in the wide channels and threatening runs in attack,“ he said.
