Windle is new deputy

Deputy mayor Sheryl Windle is sworn in to the new council.

Sheryl Windle is the new deputy mayor of the Southern Downs Regional Council.

Voted to the position unanimously at the council’s first post-election statutory meeting, Cr Windle, who attracted the largest number of votes in the recent election, is now starting her third term in office.

“Sheryl, you’ve served the Southern Downs for eight years now,“ Mayor Cr Hamilton said. “You have the confidence of this council and you clearly have the confidence of our community with the highest number of votes in the election. You bring considerable experience to the role and you have a strong commitment to the community.”

In accepting, Cr Windle said: “I look forward to what the next four years will bring. I think it’s going to be a very positive experience. I feel a very positive vibe in the community. People wanted change and they have seen change already.

“I’m happy to fulfil the role to the best of my ability. I think this team can deliver.”

Three other people were elected to positions during the meeting.

Voted in as chairperson of the Local Disaster Management Group was Cr Cynthia McDonald.

Cr Hamilton said Cr McDonald had proved to the community in the previous drought that she was there for them.

“I am confident that with your military experience you are the right person for this role,” she said.

Deputy chairs were Melissa Hamilton and Joel Richters.

The council is responsible for the establishment and co-ordination of the Local Disaster Management Group. It has the primary responsibility of managing and responding to disasters at the community level, in accordance with legislation. Other members include representatives from police, ambulance, fire and emergency services, SES and the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services.
