Since the Covid-19 pandemic, poultry sellers have observed an increased interest in locals buying from them, particularly chickens.

On a Sunday once a month, the Stanthorpe markets occur and so do poultry sales, which sellers Stephen and Jayne Martin participated in over the weekend.

The couple are part of the Stanthorpe Poultry Club and Stephen said a lot of people have been coming in to purchase chickens.

“There’s a lot more smaller landholders who want their own poultry, either as pets or so they can have their own fresh eggs,” he said.

With the prospect of lockdowns over the past two years, Stephen said that having access to a food source like eggs was likely encouraging more people.

Furthermore, Jayne said the sale was a good community thing for people to do.

“They come together, meet a lot of people, and ask a lot of questions,” she said.

“It’s also a chance to see breeds that they probably wouldn’t know.”

The couple, who have been living in Stanthorpe for the past 16 months, said Sunday (the most recent sale) was a busy day.

“The public know about it through Facebook, and we sell the chickens between $10 and $30 – not too expensive,” they said.

“There’s people there selling or swapping not only chickens but ducks, caged birds, budgies, parrots, canaries, and guineafowls.”
