Queensland primary producers are being urged to take action now as the natural disaster season approaches, with forecasts indicating an increased risk of bushfires, heavy rainfall, floods, and tropical cyclones across the state.
The Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) is calling on farmers to ready their properties ahead of what could be a dangerous season, particularly with warnings of above-average rain and fire risks.
Fire authorities have raised concerns for large areas of Queensland, especially in the southern and central regions, which have seen significant pasture growth after last summer’s rain, followed by a dry winter. This combination has created ideal conditions for bushfires. Northern Queensland is also at heightened risk due to unseasonal rainfall, which has resulted in increased fuel loads.
The DAF is offering resources and information to help farmers and graziers mitigate potential damage to crops, livestock, and property. Producers are encouraged to ensure they are well-prepared for any emergency.
Key preparedness tips include:
– Reviewing insurance policies and developing a financial plan to cover potential losses.
– Photographing property assets in their current state to assist with post-disaster claims.
– Making sure all members of the household and farm workers are familiar with evacuation plans in the event of a flood, bushfire, or cyclone.
– Ensuring livestock have access to higher or safer ground with adequate food and water.
– Keeping emergency contacts, including local council, veterinarian, and animal welfare agency numbers, easily accessible.
– Making sure livestock are properly identified in case they are displaced during a disaster.
Primary producers are also encouraged to contact their local council for information on evacuation routes and shelter arrangements. Further resources for disaster readiness can be found at the Queensland Government’s business portal, business.qld.gov.au/disaster-hub.
