Rain doesn’t dampen spirits at State Age Championships

The rain and cold weather over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend did nothing to dampen the spirits of more than 1900 netballers who travelled to Brisbane for the 2011 State Age Championships, including four teams from Warwick.
More than 160 teams played close to 1000 games of netball in the championship held at Metropolitan Districts Netball Association (MDNA) in Coorparoo.
With a sea of netballers covering the grounds at MDNA, it was hard to believe that just six months ago the courts were under water.
Warwick’s 13 Years and 15 Years Division 2 teams both came last in their respective division but our 14 Years Division 2 team had better success, coming ninth out of 14. Warwick’s 16 Years Division 2 team placed 10th out of 13.
Netball Queensland state com-petitions manager Adam Barry said the event was a huge success.
“Across the three days of netball there was a great atmosphere with teams travelling from around Queensland to take part.
“The rain held off for most of the weekend, but it did not stop the teams from taking to the courts.”
Netball Queensland CEO Cameron O’Hara said the State Age Championships were a critical pathway for developing athletes, coaches and umpires in Queensland.
He said this year was even more important for Queenslanders after the natural disasters that have affected associations around the State.
“Metropolitan Districts truly epitomises our Standing Tall campaign,” Mr O’Hara said.
“The association was one of the many around the State devastated by flooding, but they have stood tall and have successfully hosted one of the biggest events on the Netball Queensland calendar.”
