YATES FLIES INTO MEDAL ROUND

The Stanthorpe Golf Club Medal of Medallist competition draws ever closer and opportunities for golfers to secure their spot in the round are slipping away with the passing of each month .

On Saturday the winners of the August Monthly Medal Golf and putting competition, sponsored by the team from Stanthorpe Newsagency added their names to the list of those who have already qualified.

Shaun Yates has only recently joined the club and if his result on Saturday is any indication it seems that his game and the Stanthorpe course are well suited. Yates shot a handy 87 off the stick for a nett 63 which was a winning score. It was a very steady round from Yates. The only blemish on his card, an eight at the 13th. Of course, a round like that does not slip past the handicapper. No surprise his handicap has undergone an adjustment.

Yates will be in the mix in the Medal of Medallists round later in the year.

Matt Waterworth who parred the course, but with a much lower handicap could be considered unlucky and settled for the runner’s up position scoring a nett 69. Waterworth returned the lowest gross score of the round.

In the Ladies event Lisa Stuart continued her good form with a nett 78. A countback between Stuart and Mei Bell was necessary before Stuart was declared the winner. Stuart also returned the lowest gross (95) in the Ladies event. Mei Bell settling for the runner’s up spot after the countback.

Angelo Maugeri (26 putts) won the men’s putting event and Nikki Waterworth (31 putts) the ladies.

The men’s Pin shots went to Craig Fossey (3), David Burgess (12) and Brad Silver (17).

Margie Locke held the pin at 12 and Lisa Stuart at 17.

The Pro-pins were collected by Matt Waterworth (1/10), Brendan Barker (5/14) and Mark Hendry, (9/18).

The men’s rundown went to scores of nett 74 and better and the ladies to nett 79.

There are some upcoming events players should be aware of including the Foursomes Championships next Sunday (14 August). Tee off is 9.30am following Sporters. There is still time to arrange a partner for this popular alternate shot competition.

Having been postponed on several occasions due to the wet weather, the greens will undergo their annual coring on Monday 15 August. Helpers will be very welcome. If you and your rake can help, please be at the club around 7.30. Everyone is welcome.

The Hello Yellow Charity Golf Day is on again on Sunday 28 August. The event, a three person Ambrose is sponsored by the Community Bank Stanthorpe/Bendigo Bank. Proceeds go to the Stanthorpe Cancer Support Group.

The day is open to all golfers, including social players. You are not required to hold an official handicap, so get your team of three together and enter the event. Contact the club or drop into the clubhouse to book your time slot. There will be prizes for the teams’ and novelty events so remember to wear something yellow. The Granite Belt Rotarians will once again be manning the BBQ.

Meanwhile, club members, Madeline Jarman and Lorraine Evans sponsor this Saturday’s Single Stableford event. There is a time sheet is on the board at the club

VALE – Val White

Members of the Stanthorpe Bowls Club, the wider Lawn Bowling community and the Granite Belt community were saddened to hear of the death of Val White.

Her passing marks the end of an era for the Stanthorpe Bowls Club as Val White was the longest serving member of the club. A wonderful woman and a great bowler. At 94 years young, Val bowled until earlier this year when she was forced to give up the game she loved due to deteriorating health. Val was also very active in the community and will be sadly missed by many. Deepest condolences to her family and friends.

SHOOTERS BATTLE STRONG GUSTY WINDS

When members Southern Downs Rifle Club gathered at the 300 yard firing line on the Risdon Range on Sunday conditions were not ideal. There were good fields in each division however competitors had to do battle with the strong, gusty winds as well as the targets.

In the Standard class, winner Dave Taylor shot well and was denied a maximum score by just one point.

It was a tight finish between eventual winner Richard McKillop and Kevin Jones in the Open class. Just a couple of points separated the winner and runner up.

Jade Sheehan was on target and finished ahead of a large field in the Sporter / Hunter class. Curtis Gray did best of the rest finishing runner up.

Rob Bondfield was the sole entrant in the Target class and put down a good score.

VISITORS ON THE STANTHORPE COURT

Stanthorpe mallet players were joined on their court by members of the Warwick club on Tuesday (2/8) and conditions were ideal for the Association Croquet games. Leslie Grayson (Warwick) and Grace Howard played Dorothy Gartery (Warwick) and Pauline Smith in the morning games. Gartery and Smith got away to a good start and held an early lead. Smith played well and had a run of two and scored a hoop with an excellent long shot that went the length of the court. Her partner, Gartery played very consistently. Grayson and Howard used skill and strategy to stay in touch however it was not quite enough. In a game that went down to the wire Gartery, and Smith won 16-15. Grayson and Howard each had one run of two.

Tony Hinde (Warwick) and Joy Newman went head to head with Julie Grayson (Warwick) and Jenny Tunbridge. Grayson and Tunbridge held a narrow lead early in the game after both scoring a peel before a hiccup at hoop four where they were stuck.

It allowed Hinde and Newman to score a run of three hoops and make up ground. In a similar result to the first game, it was not enough, and the early leaders, Grayson and Tunbridge won by a point. The score 17-16.

Games continued into the afternoon. Tony Hinde played solo against Leslie Grayson and Jenny Tunbridge. Hinde took the lead after scoring five consecutive hoops. A mix of consistent play and excellent tactics allowed Grayson and Tunbridge to narrow the gap. Late in this game the red ball of Hinde was stuck at hoop one allowing Grayson and Tunbridge to secure a 9-8 win. In the final game of the day, Dorothy Gartery and Sharyn Roser scored a win over Julie Grayson and Pauline Smith. Roser scored one peel in the game. Players struggled with their length in this game as the drier greens played faster than earlier in the day.

HUGHES GETS THE JOB DONE

There was a larger turn out for Sunday Sporters in Stanthorpe than in recent weeks. Perhaps some players thought Jack Frost had left the district. Alas it was not the case and with the back nine in play a sneaky breeze soon joined the party. That early morning sunshine had looked so promising.

Barry Hughes played a steady round and returned nett 26 to take the Sunday honours. Recently he has been let down by his play on the greens but after Sunday’s round it seems he has this part of his game under control.

Hamish Adams returned to Sporters and made his presence felt. A round of nett 28 earned him the runner’s up prize. Adams also played a well-controlled round but a disappointing eight on the second hole proved costly at the end of the day.

Margie Locke also returned nett 28 but missed out at the cut of the cards and settled for a spot in the run down.

38 was the best gross score of the round, and it was of little surprise that the score came from Brendan Barker. There are now a handful of players who can go low on the nine holes. Looks as though could be some interesting competition on the horizon.

There were two pin shots on offer and although several players got close no one managed to hold the green. The pin shots therefore went unclaimed.

This Sunday play is on the front nine and gets underway between 7.30 and 8am. This week the Stanthorpe Club Foursomes Championships follow so all Sporters must tee off from the first tee.

IMPROVED CONDITIONS; IMPROVED SCORES

A glance at the score sheets after the Warwick Ladies mid-week Stableford competition told a very different story to the results seen in May and June. There were only a handful of players at that time able to get above 30 points due to the condition of the course.

This past week the winning score was 35 points and four players finished with that score. A tricky count back was required to find the winner but, in the end, Di Evans was declared the winner ahead of Yvonne Pinington, Melanie McLennan and Wendy Rhea.

Di’s 19 points on the back nine secured her win. Wendy Rhea took he honours on the front nine with 19 points.

Melanie, Lyn McKillop and Narelle Norris shared the Pro Pin on the seventh.

Three more gobbles were added to the chart after the round – Jill Barnes (4th), Yvonne Pinington (9th) and Lyn McKillop (16th).

BEGINNING TO LOOK LIKE NORMAL

The Warwick Ladies golf competitions are beginning to return to normal and on Saturday the women played the programmed monthly medal competition for the first time in three months.

That’s not to say conditions were ideal. There was rain again but not on the day and not enough to keep the golfers off the course.

Samantha Hinze won the Division One medal with a round of 75 nett . She also bagged a win in the putting competition needing only 28 putts for her round. Narelle Norris (78 nett) was the runner up.

The Division Two winner was Trish Roberts (72 nett). Her 30 putts also won her the putting competition. Yvonne Pinington who returned 74 nett was the Division Two runner up.

Lois Wilson took the front nine honours after a countback with Lyn McKillop.

Players mentioned in the rundown included Michelle Wright (76 nett), Di Macdonald (76 nett), Wendy Rhea (77 nett), Helen Olsen (78 nett), Trish Bell (78 nett) and Jill Barnes (80 nett). Sam Hinze, Carole Brandon and Trish Bell won the approaches in their divisions.

The Warwick Condamine Sports Club sponsor the Monthly Medal competitions.
