PENNANTS KEEP BOWLERS BUSY

Like other clubs across the Southern Downs many of the bowlers from the Summit Club were involved with the District pennants competition at the weekend.

Several members did play social bowls on Saturday at the Summit however result of those matches were unavailable as this paper goes to press.

The SDMDBA (Southern Downs Men’s District Bowls Association) Division One Pennants final between Texas and the Summit was played at the Texas Bowls Club on Saturday. In the perfect conditions, the Texas green was running well and as a result there were some quality bowls played.

When the 21 ends that constituted the final were complete, the Summit held a comfortable winning margin of 70 shots to 60.

Earlier in the week 12 teams played Turkey Triples on Tuesday at The Summit.

Conditions were chilly and the wind was a challenge to bowlers.

Brian Brown, Steve Tyter and Rob Capelli were the overall winners by a narrow margin after two wins plus 29. The unlucky runners up were Adrian Jackson, Jamie Zamprogno and Tony Schubert. Their team also had two wins and finished with plus 28.

The Encouragement Award went to Sharon Watkins, Cameron Wilson and Choc, a visiting bowler from Mackay. Great to see Choc on the green, hopefully he thaws out enough to come back again.

EXCELLENT CONDITIONS ON COURT

Members of the Stanthorpe Mallet Association are also finally enjoying some excellent conditions on court.

Pauline Smith played without fear against Jenny Tunbridge in the opening game. Smith played her short shots well but despite her best efforts and a double peel Tunbridge got away to a good lead which she held on to throughout the game. the game.

Tunbridge scored a run of two hoops, one peel and one double peel on her way to a convincing win.

Grace Howard and Sharyn Roser played Joy Newman and visitor Peter Goodsir. Roser and Howard took a small lead in the early stages of the game and were still ahead when the game stopped for the morning tea break. Newman and Goodsir came out after the break and found their form. They won the game 17-12. Newman score one run of three and both Goodsir and Roser scored one peel.

The weather was much more inviting on Friday, and it drew out a better field for the Gatball games.

Les Williams, Pauline Smith and Sharyn Roser won the toss and elected to play red balls in opening two games. Their opponents, the team of Jenny Tunbridge, Grace Howard, Joy Newman and Heather Widderick played the white balls.

Reds opened play however Whites took control early in the game. All members of the team played well. Newman scored hoop two with some spectacular long shots.

On their last shot Roser scored a gate and touch on hoop two for Reds. She went on to score at hoop three and an Agari for a total of four points, but it was too little too late.

Whites scored on Agari and won the game 15-11.

Game two began in much the same way as game one with taking control of hoops two and three. The Red balls were sent off the court with annoying frequency as whites enjoyed some very accurate play allowing them to win 12-8.

In game three the teams changed colours and Williams, Smith, Roser and Newman played white balls. Tunbridge, Howard and Widderick taking control of red.

Widderick played with great accuracy not missing a ball during the game. Newman continued to score spectacular long shots to hoop two and there was nothing between the teams for most of the game. Team White claimed a 10-9 win.

In the final game Widderick held her excellent form controlling hoops two and three as

the White team suddenly struggled with distance and control, often hitting their own balls out. The Red team scored a three Agaris and nail an 18-13 win.

GOOD PERFORMANCE DESPITE ADVERSE CONTIONS

On a cold morning with strong gusty winds in play shooters on the Risdon Range could have been forgiven for performances a little below par however it was not the case.

In the standard class Geoff Vollmerhause has been steadily improving his score for some time. On Sunday an excellent result saw him win the class relegating Paul Reid to second place.

As is normally the case the Open class was a close contest. Greg Wilson upset the order of things relegating perennial winner, Richard McKillop to runner up with an excellent score 125.8.

AGE AND CONDITIONS NO BARRIER

A cold morning and an icy wind was never going to stop some of the hardy members of the Clifton Benchrest club last Sunday when they rolled up for the club’s monthly shoot.

Laurie Bowe, (after whom the Range is named) was one of a number who epitomised the saying, “You can’t keep a good man(or woman) down”.

Bowe loaded his ammunition on the day as he needed it and in an excellent good performance finished third in the Men’s Open Rimfire with a total score of 541.8. and the Centrefire with 6010 points.

Not bad for a gentleman who celebrated his 90th birthday last November. Just goes to show, age is no barrier to enjoying the sport of benchrest shooting. It is also hard to keep a good man down.

Gary Manteit was once again in great form winning the Men’s Open Rimfire with a score of 586.20. He followed that up with a score of 5474 and second place in the Centrefire event.

Helen Manteit who claimed family bragging rights and top honours in the Centrefire when she outscored all comers. Her winning score 4036. She also shot the Smallest Group of 139 which incidentally is the smallest group recorded this year.

Gary was dicing with danger when he joked, he would have to wear his earmuffs all the way home after her performance.

Luke Steffen scored 547.12 to claim second place in the Men’s Open Rimfire.

Steffen’s son Cooper upstaged his father with a win on Sunday. His score of 486.6 won the Junior Rimfire event.

It was a red letter day for Marg Sullivan who despite the gusty wind conditions won the Ladies Open Rimfire scoring a PB of 551.7. Helen Manteit (546.4) finished in second place.

The Pistol competition was held on Saturday 13 August. Conditions were wet, miserable and difficult. The winner was Richard Beardsley (254). Vince Alberry (216) finished in second place and Murray Janke (139) third.

The next club competition days are 10 September (Pistol) 18 September (Benchrest).

President Helen Manteit is keen to attract more competitors to Benchrest.
