NAIDOC Week 2022 at SOTE

By The School of Total Education

Our NAIDOC celebration opened with a warm welcome to Githabul country by Aunty Del Charles and Aunty Melissa Chalmers. The students then raised the three flags together (Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islands) followed by Uncle Roger Knox singing an aboriginal environmental song “Mothers Eyes” in English and Gomeroi.

Everyone then walked down to the auditorium where our visitors joined us for a concert including presentations by the Preps, Year 3s and Year 7s and a singalong orchestrated by Uncle Roger and our talented senior band.

Our visitors were enthralled and moved by the thoughtful and sincere displays which the students had put together on the theme of ‘Heroes of Change’ and commented that they were of a very high standard. They then contributed with language lessons and a workshop on the frontier wars for the older children.
