While there were 18 women away at the District Championships in Dalby there was still a group of 19 playing the midweek competition in Warwick on Wednesday.

Congratulations to the midweek winner Ellie Casey. She finished the round with 31 points just edging out Jan Aspinall (30 Points). Both took home Red Rooster vouchers. Lois Wilson had an amazing front nine scoring of 25 points to nail the front nine win.

Di MacDonald, Di Johnston, Tub Ingall and Janet Davis all featured in the rundown with scores of 29 points.

Helen Olsen was on the green on the seventh and her second shot took her to within 355 mm of the flag. There were a few players measuring around 700 mm from the hole on the 16th, but Annice Payne won the approach – her shot landing 600mm from the pin.

COOK A WINNER AND BACK TO BACK FOR SIMMERS

An Individual Stableford was the format of Saturday’s competition for members of the Stanthorpe golf Club on Saturday. The men’s event was sponsored by club member Marie Cook while the ladies event sponsored by another member, Nathan Stibbard of GTL Concrete Pumping.

Marie Cook has not been playing a lot of golf lately but on Saturday had an excellent round returning the winning score of 35-points and was happy to receive the prize from her fellow sponsor, Nathan.

After a countback Nikki Waterworth was just one point back in second on 34 with Lyn Ludlow settling for a mention in the run-down.

Unfortunately, Nathan Stibbard was not able to return the favour and collect Marie his co-sponsor trophy in the men’s event.

That honour went to Aaron Simmers with a score of 40 points giving him back-to-back wins in Saturday competitions. Will that mean more shots shaved off the handicap? Only time will tell. A count-back was also necessary in the men’s comp to determine the runner. Terry Roser getting the nod over Mark Hendry, after both returned 39 points.

Brent (Meggsy) Irwin is in the process of obtaining his AGU handicap. If the rest of his game is as good as his tee shot at three where he held the pin shot, he could end up with a short number. Scott Constable was again in the thick of the action collecting the pin at 12 and the pro-pins at 1/10 and 9/18. Barry Hughes collected at the 17th and Matt Waterworth held the remaining pro-pin at 5/14. The birdies’ nest was unclaimed.

The men’s run-down went to scores of 36 and better.

Golfers can look forward to two full days of golf next weekend.

SPORTERS COME OUT TO PLAY

A much-improved field came out to play Sporters on Sunday which may indicate the improved weather conditions are seeing some players emerge from their winter hibernation.

The previous week’s winner, Hamish Adams, showed he was no flash in the pan. He took the top prize again after another good round. Adams finished with 44 for the nine holes which translated to a win with nett 22.

Aaron Simmers was a few shots back on nett 25 falling short of Saturday/Sunday wins. He settled for the runner’s up prize. Margie Locke was also close to the action the action. Her nett 26, good enough for a mention in the run down.

Brendan Barker continued his hold on the lowest gross score on the needed only 38 strokes for the round. Two pin shots pin at were up for grabs however only one was claimed. Ivan Juriss claiming the Pin at 12.

There is no Sporters this Sunday. The course will be bathed in yellow for the Hello Yellow day charity day. Quite a few Sporters have nominated for this event and hopefully they are successful. Sunday Sporters reconvene the following Sunday with play on the front nine. An open invitation for all to come and play with tee off from 7.30 am to 8am.

A WORK IN PROGRESS

Things are coming together well for Sam and Feathers (Neil) McCosker, the new proprietors of the Birdie Bar and Bistro at the Warwick Golf Club. On Wednesday not only did they sponsor their first golf event, Sporters. Feathers even found time to pick up the clubs and return to playing after a lengthy time away from the game.

We will leave it to Neil to explain his finishing position in the field. His game might be a “work in progress,” but he was chuffed with his pin shot at the fifth which earned him the NTP.

In perfect conditions 53 players teed off for the weekly competition. Jet Jensen returning the winning score of 38 points. Hot on his heels was runner up Michael Hoskin who scored 37 points to claim the runner’s up spot.

Sam McLennan (36) David Hynes, Doug Rickert (35) earned a mention and a ball in the rundown. the same trio figured in the Pro Pin at the 11th – McLennan (three balls), David Hynes (two balls) and Rickert (one ball).
