WEATHER KEEPS NUMBERS DOWN

Six women from the Warwick Club played in the Warwick Sporters Crimestoppers Day on Wednesday. The unpleasant weather conditions deterring many of the usual midweek ladies.

Anne Lyons and Maria Carey won the Ladies competition. The runners up were Judy Lester and Gail Watts and Vicki Bennett and Lyn McKillop finished in third place. The Sporters club was able to donate $500 to support Crimestoppers.

Another small field teed off in Saturday’s Aussie six pack day.

Tub Ingall and Annice Payne took the honours returning a score of 68. Mel McLennan and Roslyn Darton were the runners -up. Their score 63.

There were some excellent individual scores throughout the round which will see some movement on the Shootout board.

Majella Kahler who has been in good form had a great round of 40 points. Roslyn Darton 37 points and Tub Ingall 36 points.

This week the ladies will be playing the midweek medal sponsored by the Warwick RSL – look for the results in next week’s edition.

On Saturday the Ladies play a red Stableford.

The Warwick women golfers would like to wish out going Golf Pro, Sam Eaves and Kimberly and their boys, good luck in their new adventure. The ladies wish to thank Sam for everything he has done for the ladies’ golfing community as the club pro and friend. Members will be looking forward to seeing you around on the golf courses or even on the TV.

SPORTERS WELCOME IMPROVED CONDITIONS

Sunday the weather and golf Gods got their heads together and the result was one of the better mornings for Stanthorpe Sporters golfers and it was a very welcome change.

The sun was out and only a light breeze to worry about. The fairways however are still very wet as Sporters played the front nine.

After suffering a few lean weeks, President Thorny finally turned ordinary form into winning form and claimed the top prize with a nett 28 score.

He hit tee his shots quite well but had still had trouble with fairway shots, but his handicap helped him to claim the win.

If John Rawlings who picked the best card and claimed the prize.

Max Hunter missed out on the runner’s up prize but figured in the run down.

Paul Armstrong was back on the track, and it was no surprise to see him walk off with the best gross, 42 for the round.

Only one pin shot was on offer. This went to par three specialist, Terry Byrnes. His tee shot at the third was pin high, though slightly right of the pin and just managed to hold the green.

Perhaps the unlucky player of the day was Gary Kirby who reportedly hit some very good tee shots, some of which even landed on the fairway in play. Gary admitted that he trouble with his second shots, playing off the fairway. A bit of practice might be in order.

This Sunday, Sporters play the back nine with tee off at 8am and of course there is an open invitation for anyone to join Sporters for a round.

CHAMPIONSHIP WINNERS SET THE STANDARD

Another month is coming to an end and on Saturday the Stanthorpe golfers played their end of month team’s event, Canadian foursomes. Teams were playing for the Howard and Sons cups. This event has been played now for many years and the club is grateful to the Howard family particularly Terry, Mal and Freddie Howard for their continued support and sponsorship of the event.

Just a week ago Brendan Barker won the club’s championships with a win in the stroke event. In this competition he partnered Danny Folkers, and the pair returned the best nett score, and their names will be added to the cups.

Finishing a very close second was the team of Mick O’Brien and Nat Marano who were a fraction of a point away.

The runners up were closely followed by the combination of Barry Hughes and Aaron Simmers who collected the run down prize.

The ladies played the same event. Their round sponsored by club member Mei Bell. Marie Cook followed the pattern set by Brendon Barker and after her success the previous week in the Ladies’ championship. Partnered with Lorraine Evans to collect the top prize. Mei Bell and Lisa Stuart finished in second place.

Santo Cavallaro won the men’s pin at three, while Brendan Barker collected the remaining pins at 12 and 17. The ladies pin at three was unclaimed however Mei Bell claimed 12 and 17.

There were no takers for the pro-pin at 1/10. Danny Folkers was more successful at 5/14 after the drive of Brendan Barker. Alan Kerr did best at 9/18 after hitting second shot with partner, Mark Hendry.

October arrives on Saturday which means members will play the October medal and putting competition. It is an individual stroke event and will be sponsored by club member, Michael Lane.

There is a time sheet for Saturday on the board at the club house hopefully conditions on Saturday will be somewhat drier underfoot.

Members should be aware that the time sheets for the Open carnival in October are now available.

The first day of the Open carnival with will be a 4BBB and will be followed by a single event the next day. The second normally fills quickly so players who intend to play would be well advised to nominate as soon as possible to secure their preferred time slot.
