SOGGY DAMP SUNDAY

Stanthorpe Sporters headed out onto another soggy and damp course on Sunday morning. The back nine showing the effects of more rain again on Friday. I hear reports that a few balls disappeared underground never to be located again. Well not in the short term someone may unearth them in the future.

The field was not large this week. Some regular Sporters testing their luck with an overseas holiday and away on family business. The competition however was very keen from those wading through the nine holes.

Angelo Maugeri returned the best nett round of the day. His score of nett 28 landed him first prize.

Terry Byrnes returned to the winner’s list this week. He returned nett 31 which was the next best and Not for a pin shot this time, but for next best score of nett 31 to take the runner up prize.

Byrnes pleased to be back in the winner’s circle for something other than a pin shot.

There were two pin shots on offer but only one claimed and that was by Paul Armstrong for his shot at 17.

Armstrong also returned the best gross score. His score of 38 gross very good in the conditions. The pin shot at 12 was unclaimed.

Sunday, Sporters will be playing the front nine. Tee off time is 8am and there is an open invitation for anyone to join them for a hit. Rain events are certainly unwelcome.

Despite the cloudy conditions and an earlier short sharp shower before starting time weather for golfers playing the October monthly medal and putting competition in Stanthorpe were dry. The ominous looking conditions deterred a few that would normally play the stroke round. Saturday’s round was sponsored by Michael Lane of Amcal Pharmacy who provided the winner’s trophies.

Scott Constable played in the early morning time slot. Constable scored 73 off the stick for a winning nett score of 71. Constable looks to have his game back in order and given that there was no run at all on the course after the overnight rain, this was a very good round indeed. He also had the best gross round of the day and joins the Medal of Medallists field later in the year.

Eric Ree was another who played well and returned an excellent nett 72 to claim the runner up.

In the Ladies’ medal event a countback was necessary to determine the winner when Marie Cook and Margie Locke each returned nett 76. The outcome of the countback saw Marie take half shot win with Margie settling for the runner up prize. Marie Cook also had the low gross score of the round in the ladies competition.

The putting competition winners were Richard Reardon (26 putts) in the men’s section and Lisa Stuart (28 putts) for her round.

Mick O’Brien collected the pin at three and Keith Joes had success at 12. The pin at 17 was unclaimed as was the birdies’ nest.

Lisa Stuart cleaned up all three of the Ladies’ pins (3, 12 and 17).

Scott Constable picked up the Pro Pin collected at 1/10, Darryl Boekholt at 5/14 and Matt Burgess had best shot at 9/18.

In a lengthy run down, Helen Jones, Stephen Kay, Mick O’Brien, Aaron Simmers, Keith Jones, Richard Reardon and Darryl Boekholt all claimed a trophy.

Players are reminded that the Stanthorpe Open carnival is fast approaching, and time sheets are available at the club. If you have a preferred tee time, the advice is to nominate as soon as possible.

The competition next Saturday is a Single Stableford event sponsored by Wilshire and Co, courtesy of Todd Wilshire. A time sheet for the event is on the board at the club. Surely, we must be due for a Friday night with little or no rain on the Granite Belt or at the very least the Stanthorpe Golf Course.

BIG DAY ON RANGE FOR CLFTON SHOOTERS

The Cliton Benchrest Shooting Club held their monthly shoot recently and there were several new and returning faces filling the benches.

In another family affair, his daughter, Mia, finished third in the Junior Open Rimfire with a score of 548.7.

CARNIVAL A BLOOMING SUCCESS

Weeks of planning and preparation paid dividends last weekend with the Warwick East Bowls Club holding the very successful Rose Fiesta open fours carnival.

The green was filled with all seven rinks in play.

Organisers breathed a sigh of relief as the rain that threatened to interrupt the day held off until the final game was played.

The runner’s up Rob Alcock, Peter Collis, Peter Ayerst and Lynn Collie while in third place was the team of Gaye Wilmott, Jill Hankins, and Judy and Neville Richardson. KICKING GRANDFINAL GOALS

Sunday, the rain that was falling mainly on the Southern Cross Bowls club eased in time for a late morning start to the annual NRL Bowls Day at the Cross Bowls. The green played well but ran a little slower than usual (bit like the Eels on Sunday night).

A fun day began with NRL club colours worn by most bowlers and Clark Davidson doing a great job of the task of sorting them into football club teams for two competition games.

Members were pleased to see Allan Davidson finally back on deck, if only to spectate on the sideline after being on the injury list for some time.

You can’t play footy bowls without good food and drink, and I understand the burgers from the canteen were most definitely worth the entry fee thanks to the BBQ chef and kitchen volunteers. Pete also did a good job keeping the refreshments flowing.

The resident Yowie (President Cameron Wilson) made sure everyone was able to buy raffle tickets for the footy clubs’ prize pool and the lucky winners were Roy Lowe, Jeff from the Sovereign Hotel, Brayden Chicky, Daryl Busch, Kev Mooney, Yowie, Dangerman, Robyn Smith, Alan Buse, Irishman Val Gray, Whispering Pete and Gordy Assay.

They each received donated NRL Club supporters clothing ranging from a jacket, scarves, caps, polo shirts etc as well as a football and meat vouchers. Some much desired NRL dot paintings by resident artist Pat Gainey were also up for grabs.

The new Jackpot Lucky Member Draw was run by President Yowie and won by Chairman Pat. The number on the ball drawn out had to be thoroughly checked before Pat could take the cash as it seemed there might have been a forward pass, but after a bunker review it was accepted as correct.

Meanwhile on the green, team Eels were slow starters but picked up some points in the second half.

The Storm started well but petered out as the competition got stronger. The Broncos team had the talent, played well, but needed more than a new coach to get them over the line.

Last year’s bowls winning team at the Cross, the Dragons, were just too cocky to get enough points this time.

The Bunnies put their best rabbit’s foot forward but got stuck on 13 twice.

The Cowboys had a good team on paper, but seemed to have been penalised way too often.

The Dogs had a bit of bark but no bite and weren’t in it at all especially after the Eels got away with a forward pass.

Manly thought a dozen points in each game would be good enough, but needed a twin turbo to power them to the podium.

Just like a ref, the poor old jack was the centre of attention, but was knocked about severely throughout the day and was picked up out of the gutter more than once.

I’m not sure if they kicked the most bowls or tackled the opposition the best, but the top scorers and winners for the day were the mighty Gold Coast Titans team consisting of Matty Shepherd, Cita Weier and Gordon Assay.

Congratulations to them for winning the spectacular trophy that was kindly donated by Patrick Gainey, Clark Davidson and Dave Scotney. They will also each receive Titans dot paintings once the paint dries.

Once again the day was a hoot and thanks to the club members as well as the Penrith Panthers and North Queensland Cowboys clubs for supporting our footy day with their generous donations.

Now, this is not to be missed.

This Saturday 8 October 8 at 10am the final of the District Singles will be played between Peter Collis and Rob Capelli at the Southern Cross Bowls Club. Spectators are most welcome, and the bar will be open and operating.

There will also be Social Mixed Bowls this Saturday starting at 1pm, Cameron (0452 421 961) is the contact for the social games.

the club is hosting Turkey Triples on Wednesday 12 October. Games start at 10am and the Games Director is Clark (0427 673 277).

For barefoot bowls, social and competition bowls, functions and bar, it is difficult to go past the Southern Cross Bowls Club Inc. located opposite St Mary’s Church in Warwick.
